Researchers from Porto find a new biomarker for the early detection of colorectal cancer

A recent study, led by Ricardo Marcos-Pinto and Ângela Fernandes, with Henrique Fernandes-Mendes as its first author, revealed associations between aberrant glycoprofiles and clinical variables. This study, conducted in the Immunology, Cancer & Glycomedicine group at i3S (led by Salomé Pinho), reveals an association between the levels of branched N-glycans in epithelial cells and factors such as age, smoking and polyp dimension, suggesting a link between these glycans and colorectal cancer progression.

The lack of a sensitive and specific biomarker for early detection of prostate cancer (PCa) is a major obstacle to the effective treatment of these patients. This study aimed to study the volatile urinary metabolic profile of PCa patients (n=58) and control individuals (cancer-free, n=60), to identify a potential panel of biomarkers for non-invasive PCa detection. The results obtained revealed a panel of biomarkers with 6 volatile compounds, which was able to identify this type of cancer with a sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of 89%, 83% and 86%, respectively.

Autonomous and self-signalled biosensors for cancer biomarkers

Electrochemical biosensors allow portable applications for monitoring cancer biomarkers, which is especially relevant for screening programs targeting early detection. Yet, these devices need electrical energy and electronic parts behind the overall measuring process. This work presents a first approach to eliminate these requirements, by using a photovoltaic cell as electrical power source and an electrochromic cell as signalling element.
