Isoquinolinequinone N-oxides with diverging mechanisms of action induce collateral sensitivity against multidrug resistant cancer cells

Work recently published in the “European Journal of Pharmacology" by Dr. Mélanie Barbosa, Dr. Ryan D. Kruschel et al., has demonstrated the potential of two isoquinolinequinone N-oxides (RK2 and RK3) as promising candidates for the next stages of drug development against multidrug resistant cancers, specifically linked to the overexpression of ABCB1. This work is the result of a collaboration of Prof. Helena Vasconcelos from i3S, University of Porto - Portugal, with Prof. Florence McCarthy, from the School of Chemistry, University College Cork - Ireland.

Finding the Achilles heel of cancer

A research team led by Mónica Bettencourt Dias, from Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, discovered important features of cancer cells that may help clinicians fighting cancer.

New bioimaging approach to quantify protein expression in heterogeneous cancer cell populations

Immunofluorescence microscopy (IF) is a widely used technique that takes advantage of fluorescent-labelled markers to visualize the distribution of molecules at the cellular or at the tissue level.  Still, quantitative analysis of fluorescence microscopy images is difficult when dealing with a heterogeneous cell population. The high variability of the expression profiles between cells impairs the extraction of a representative overview/map of a particular target.

KRAS oncogenic signaling extends beyond cancer cells to orchestrate the microenvironment

This review covers the findings related to alterations in the tumor microenvironment induced by KRAS activation in cancer cells, bringing to attention new mechanisms of KRAS-induced tumor progression which may have a great impact on the design of new therapies that target cancer cells by abrogating their interaction with the tumor microenvironment.
