TGF-β signaling pathway plays a pivotal role in a wide variety of diseases, including prostate cancer. Interestingly, TGF-β exhibits a dual role in cancer, since in late-stage tumours, the cellular machinery subverts the signalling pathway to promote the cancer progression. A common mechanism used by cells to either propagate or terminate intracellular signal transduction pathways is the reversible protein phosphorylation.

A via de sinalização do TGF-β desempenha um papel fulcral em várias doenças, nas quais se inclui o cancro da próstata. O TGF-β exibe efeitos dicotómicos durante a carcinogénese, uma vez que, em fases mais avançadas do cancro, a maquinaria celular subverte os efeitos inibitórios da via para promover a progressão do cancro. As vias de sinalização intracelulares são reguladas por vários mecanismos, dos quais se destaca a fosforilação reversível.

This study is part of the EUR-GAST Project, established to elucidate the effects of Helicobacter pylori infection, genetic polymorphisms and environmental factors in gastric cancer etiology in European populations. The EUR-GAST Project is enclosed in a much larger European investigation (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition – EPIC) which is designed to investigate the relationships between diet, nutritional status, lifestyle and environmental factors and the incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases.
