Researchers at IPATIMUP (Joana Paredes group) are focused in P-cadherin, an adhesion molecule that induces cancer stem cell and invasive properties in breast cancer. In its newest publication, this group found a downstream signaling pathway that helps clarify P-cadherin mediated aggressive effects.

This work reports an important crosstalk between P-cadherin and the laminin receptor α6β4, a link that was never previously described. The activation of this heterodimer points to a new molecular mechanism that may be targeted to counteract the effects induced by this adhesion molecule.

Investigadores do grupo de Genética do Cancro do IPATIMUP (Joana Paredes) focam o seu estudo na P-caderina, uma molécula de adesão que induz invasão celular e que confere propriedades estaminais agressivas em carcinoma de mama.

Neste trabalho, publicado na revista Oncotarget, o grupo de Joana Paredes descreve uma via de sinalização que explica os efeitos agressivos da P-caderina nos carcinomas de mama do subtipo basal, para os quais novos alvos terapêuticos são urgentemente necessários.

Cancer is frequently associated with the biosynthesis of aberrant glycan structures, among which STn is a major player. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of using a plant lectin, Sambucus nigra, as the recognition element of STn. Coupled to a biosensor the strategy was effective to discriminate between cancer and healthy serum samples.

O cancro está frequentemente associado à biosíntese de estruturas aberrantes, incluindo a sintese de STn. O nosso trabalho demonstra a eficácia de uma lectina, Sambucus nigra, como elemento de reconhecimento de STn. Acoplada a um biosensor demonstrou ser uma estratégia eficaz para discriminar entre soros de individuos saudáveis e indivíduos com cancro.
