Department of Radiotherapy of Hospital de Santa Maria publishes results of eyelid carcinoma treatment with high-dose-rate brachytherapy

The Department of Radiotherapy of Hospital de Santa Maria has already published in Brachytherapy, the journal of American Society of Brachytherapy, the results of 17 cases of eyelid carcinomas treated with high-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy. It is the publication with the largest number of basal cell carcinomas undergoing this type of treatment and the second largest in terms of total number of lesions, including basal and squamous cell carcinomas. With a median followup of 40 months, the local control rate was 94.1%, similar to that achieved with other treatments, including surgery.

TERT Promoter Mutations in Skin Cancer: The Effects of Sun Exposure and X-Irradiation

A team of IPATIMUP researchers had previously demonstrated that alterations in the telomerase gene are common to different types of cancer, including tumors of the skin, brain, bladder, and thyroid and are associated with increased levels of this enzyme in tumors. The same team now published a study in Journal of Investigative Dermatology, where they analyzed two types of skin cancer, melanoma and basal cell carcinoma, and demonstrates that telomerase gene mutations are associated with sun exposure and are also associated with a poorer prognosis in melanoma.
