Paula Guedes de Pinho, Márcia Carvalho and Joana Pinto were recently guest editors of a Special Issue book “Cancer Metabolomics 2018”, published in Metabolites journal, focused in the recent advancements in the investigation of cancer metabolism through metabolomic approaches. The metabolome comprises the set of low molecular weight compounds present in cells, being influenced by several factors, such as diseases, lifestyle, among others.

As investigadoras Paula Guedes de Pinho, Márcia Carvalho e Joana Pinto foram recentemente editoras convidadas da edição especial do livro “Cancer Metabolomics 2018”, publicado na revista “Metabolites”, com foco nos recentes avanços na investigação do metabolismo do cancro usando uma abordagem metabolómica. O metaboloma compreende o conjunto de compostos de baixo peso molecular presentes nas células e sabe-se que este é influenciado por diversos fatores, tais como doenças, estilo de vida, entre outros.

This work reports a simple and inexpensive way of producing a device that displays a sensitive response for a given biomolecule. The device consists in hydrophobic paper, covered by a graphite home-made ink and by a sensory material, a plastic antibody tailored on-site by an electrical stimulus.

The target biomolecule was carnitine, a potential biomarker in ovarian cancer. The concept presented herein may be extended to other biomolecules, including other cancer biomarkers
